James Lee (Sarg) Joyner, age 82, of Columbia, South Carolina, went home to the Lord peacefully on Thursday, November 5, 2019. James was born to Willie and Ollitee Joyner, February 10, 1937 in Holly Hill, South Carolina. He graduated from Roberts High School in Holly Hill in 1956. He married Mildred Gaines in 1966, and together they raised four daughters.
James was preceded in death by his parents Willie and Ollitee, and brothers Wilson, Gordon and Johnnie Joyner. He leaves to cherish his memory his wife of 53 years, Mildred, four daughters - Alma Linda Ravenel, Georgette Howell, Angelette (Henry) Snell and Tracy (Reginald) Motley; two siblings - Charles (Barbara) Joyner and Shirley (Walter) Sumpter; nine grandchildren, nine greatgrandchildren, and a host nieces and nephews. James joined the United States Army in 1956, served in Vietnam, and retired after 20 years of service. After retirement he moved to Long Branch, New Jersey where he worked at the Earl Naval base then drove for Arrow Limousine for 10 years.
James, affectionately known as Sarg, was known and loved by many for his quiet demeanor and loving spirit. He loved to cook and was known for his barbequing skills and famous sweet potato pies. When he was not cooking, he loved watching Tiger Woods and the New York Giants. He had a passion for music, particularly jazz, and enjoyed keeping his extensive music collection current. His daughters made sure he was listening to soothing sounds of jazz and gospel during his final days. James was a loving husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother, and friend to many. Simply put, he loved his family.
