Daniel Martino was born to the late Thomas and Zula Martino on May 21, 1949 in Holly Hill, S.C. Affectionately known as “Baby Boy” and “Louie,” he departed this life on August 27, 2020 at the Medical University of South Carolina in Charleston, S.C. At birth, Daniel’s doctors said he may not live past the age of eight, but God said differently. God allowed him to live and love everyone he met for 71 years.
Daniel became a member of Greater Target A.M.E. Church at an early age. If there were ever a hymn or a spiritual sung in church, Daniel knew the words. Nothing brought him more joy than singing and praising God. His life was simple. He loved God and he loved people. Each pastor at Target knew him because after church, he made it his mission to shake the pastor’s hand.
He also loved watching TV, especially old westerns, I Love Lucy, The Beverly Hillbillies, and The Flip Wilson Show. We would often listen to him at night laughing and watching old DVDs. But, more than anything on this earth, Daniel loved his family and people. Holidays were special to him because he knew his family from across the country would be visiting. He watched everyone in the family and neighborhood grow up and leave, but they always came back to visit Daniel, sense his love, and feel his spirit. The sparkle in his eyes and the slight tilt of his smile welcomed everyone and enveloped them with love.
Daniel’s “village” throughout the years included siblings: Catherine Dennis Williams (Deceased), Beatrice Martino Cummings, Thomas Martino III (Deceased), Ann Martino Hornbeak (Deceased) , Ruby Martino Thompson, Howard Martino (Deceased), Queen Martino Rouse, and Anthony Martino Sr.; a special niece and caregiver, Sandra Grace; a special grand-niece and teacher, Little Miss Jayla O’Faire; and a host of nieces, nephews, and other relatives and friends.
