On Thursday, July 23, 2020, at regional Medical Center , God, in his infinite wisdom and mercy called from labor to rest Eugene Sonny Rivers. On October 24, 1946, the first child born to the late Willie and Pearl Rivers was born in Harlem, New York He was educated in the New York City Public School System. He served in the United States Army and completed a tour in Vietnam. When he was offered to return to another tour in Vietnam, he declined and was honorably discharged. He was recognized for his bravery in the New York Times and also later in life in the Times and Democrat.
In 1986, Eugene met his sweetheart, lifetime companion and devoted wife, Antonia Rivers. In 2002 they relocated in Eutawville, SC where they joined the St James Baptist Church. Eugene served as President of the Usher’s Ministry until his health began to fail.
Eugene leaves to mourn, his loving wife, Antonia (Toni), his children, Patrina Hodges Columbia SC, Everette (Audrey) Rivers Columbia, SC Meir Perry (Haverhill, MA), and Chardale Rivers (Charleston, SC) He also leaves his grandchildren (Paul, Ryan, Chardae, Alphonso and Kamerin). 10 great grands, three brothers, Morris Rivers (Eutawville, SC, Lawrence (Miranda) Rivers of Rosedale NY and Quentin Rivers of Brooklyn , NY; Three brother-in-law and four sister-in-law; a granddaughter, Hayven Howard and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends
