Herbert Shuler Obituary

Sadly, our family and community lost a pillar on Tuesday, July 13, 2021, when Herbert Leroy Shuler, Sr., affectionately known as “Sonny” unexpectedly passed away.

Sonny, the youngest of eight children, born to the late Fessie Shuler Sr. and Idella Robinson Shuler, August 18, 1941 on St. Helena Island, Beaufort, South Carolina. Sonny was educated through the Orangeburg County School system. Afterwards he enlisted in the U.S. Army where he served as a Military Police Officer.  After being honorably discharged, Sonny had a successful career as an E & I Mechanic for 30 years with Carolina Eastman.

Sonny gave his life to the Lord at a young age and joined Live Oak A.M.E. where he served on the Trustee Board and was named “Father of the Year” in 2011 and 2012.

On June 24, 1967, he united in holy matrimony to Catherine Mazyck. This union was blessed with three children. He will be fondly remembered for his generous spirit, unfailing dedication to his family, teasing jokes, “love taps” of plucks, pinches, and wet noodles, and his willingness to help anyone in need at any time of day. Oh yes, and let us not forget his love of fishing! The fish may not have always been big, but if caught, they were always served with love.

He is preceded in death by his parents, Fessie and Idella Shuler, Sr.; brothers, Harry Lee Shuler, Robert Lee Shuler, Pinkney Floyd Shuler, David Abraham Shuler, Heyward Shuler, Sr., Fessie Shuler, Jr.; and sister, Helen Shuler who died at infancy.

His memory will be cherished and kept alive by his adoring wife of 54 years, Catherine  Shuler of the home. His children, daughters Tracy Shuler, Bridget Green and Lorraine Smith of Sandy Springs, GA; sons, Herbert Shuler, Jr. (Dawn), of Buford, GA and Travis Shuler (Danashia Walker) of Kannapolis, NC. His nine grandchildren: Shareka Ballard, Raheem Glover, DeAndra Shuler-Hudson (Keno), Joshua Shuler, Chloe Shuler, Sophia Shuler, Eliana Shuler, EliYah Shuler and Narayah Shuler and two great-grandchildren, Camille Shuler and Keno Hudson, Jr. His brother, Lonnie Calvin Shuler of Saginaw, MI and sisters-in-law, Shirley Shuler of Santee, SC,  Brenda Shuler of Neptune NJ, Ida Scott and Louise Smalls of Vance, SC, Hannah Sheard of Santee,  SC, Ella Mae Mazyck of Cross, SC, Bernice Haigler of Elloree, SC,  Idell Howell of Spartanburg , SC and brother in law Nathaniel Howell of Santee, SC. His fatherly duties extended beyond his home to his many nieces and nephews and his love was felt by many other relatives and friends.
