Idean Garrett

Idean Deloris Brown Garrett was born on October 11, 1952, to Dorothy and the late Lewis Brown of Cross, SC.  She grew up in Cross, and attended the public schools in Berkeley County, SC.

Idean received her undergraduate degree in Business Administration from Voorhees College in Denmark, SC, and was employed by the College in their Business and Finance Department for 11 years. She later earned her Master of Education degree from South Carolina State University in Orangeburg, SC. Because of her exemplary academic achievements at South Carolina State, Idean was recruited to work in their Business Administration Office. She worked as the Budget Analyst at South Carolina State for 24 years before her retirement in 2010. She also was a member of Nu Alpha Omega Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc.

At an early age, Idean accepted Christ and became a faithful member of Antioch Holiness Church in Cross, SC.  There, she participated in the Adult Choir, the Gospel Choir, the Voices of Antioch and was a member of the hospitality committee, until her death. Idean loved to laugh and sing, and was always very excited to dance and play the tambourine for the Lord.

Everyone who knew Idean knew she was a master seamstress, tailor and designer, who created clothing on a whim, only to gift them to family and friends. Her creations will be forever preserved and cherished. Idean’s talents, gifts, laughter and presence Sunday afternoons on the porch in Cross, will all be missed tremendously by her family and by those who love her.

Idean was joined in holy matrimony to the late Elester Garrett on October 11, 1975.  They made their home and raised their family in the community of Denmark, SC. Idean Garrett leaves to cherish her memory: two sons, Tondrae Garrett, Denmark, SC; Kennard Garrett (Lori), Decatur, GA; her mother, Dorothy Brown, Cross, SC; five brothers, Luther Green (Cercelia), Summerville, SC; Joe Lewis Brown, Ladson, SC; Bernard Brown (Naomi), Cross, SC; Curtis Brown (Vermell), Dallas, TX; Cornelious Brown, Cross, SC; four sisters, Marie Peña, Bronx, NY; Dr. Luretha Brown Sumpter, Summerville, SC; Doris Brown, Cross, SC; Saundra Brown-Wigfall (Nathan), Moncks Corner, SC; six grandchildren, Avian Garrett, Tondrae Garrett, Jr., Alexandria Brie Garrett, Elijah Williams, Grey Garrett, Guy Garrett; four brothers-in-law, Arthur Garrett, Jr., Alexander Garrett, Charlie Garrett, Willie James Garrett, all of Trenton, SC; three sisters-in-law, Eliza Middleton, Mattie Jackson, both of Augusta, GA, Minnie Pearl Turner (Johnny), North Augusta, SC; and a host of aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins, friends, and godchildren.

Services have been entrusted to Eutawville Community Funeral Home, Inc., located at 440 Porcher Avenue, Eutawville, SC 29048.  In lieu of flowers, the family has asked that donations be made to the Susan G. Komen foundation in Idean Garrett’s name.
