Ruth Wearing

Ruth Mazyck Wearing was born on September 8, 1940 in Santee, South Carolina to Robert Davis and Annie Howell Mazyck Davis. She was one of nine children, including Deacon Peter George Howell, Lizzie Wilson, Irene Jones, Julia Sanders, Erick Mazyck, Charlie Mazyck, Celestine Foye and Margaret “Ella Mae” Middleton. She attended Berkley, Charleston and Orangeburg County public schools. She was baptized at, and a lifelong member of, Unity Missionary Baptist Church. 

She met her future husband, Prince Wearing, when she was a teenager. The young lovers married, initially settled in Santee, and soon welcomed their son Rudolph in 1957. Almost one year later, the Wearings welcomed a daughter, Janice, to the family in 1958. A third child, Shannon Ralph, was also born in Orangeburg County in 1960.

Seeking a more comfortable lifestyle for their growing family, the Wearings headed north on I-95, and traveled approximately 705 miles to the borough of Brooklyn, in the city of New York. While settling into their new environment and establishing a new home, Larry was born in 1961. Rounding out this union was their youngest child, Aundrea, who was born in 1963. Ruth and Prince eventually purchased the brownstone at 475 Jefferson Avenue, where endless family memories were made and infamous parties were thrown. 

Both Prince and Ruth enjoyed successful careers in the New York business sector. Ruth successfully completed the coursework needed to obtain her high school diploma. After Prince passed away in 1989, Ruth continued to enjoy a long career with New York Telephone Company as one of the first Black analysts in the company. She retired in the 90s, and relocated "home" to Santee in 2004 on Empire Lane. 

Whether you called her Ma, Aunt Ruth, Grandma or Mother Wearing, she loved chatting on the phone, renovating her home, hosting and entertaining guests, and told the best jokes and stories. She never forgot a birthday, and loved being present on the dance floor for big family events. 

Ms. Wearing transitioned to her eternal Home on Friday, July 9, 2021. She is preceded in death by all of her brothers and sisters, her husband Prince Wearing, her daughter, Janice Wearing, and her grandson, Xavier Pesante. She leaves to cherish her blessed memory her sons, Rudy (Shirley) Wearing of Georgia, Ralph Wearing of North Carolina, and Larry Wearing of New York, her daughter Aundrea (Wilfredo) Wearing Pesante of Georgia, her grandchildren Rashad Wearing, Bernice Erwin, Shadé Powell, Kiara Pesante Haughton (Malik), Alahji Wearing, Wilfredo Pesante III (Christal), Dashawn Powell, Sheik Johnson, Jamia Wearing, QuaMarion McGee, Atalaya McGee, Acaia McGee, her great-grandchildren Rashad Jr., Aaliyah, Jaylen, Amari, Kimora, Laila, Kanan, Zora, plus one on the way, and a host of dear nieces, nephews, cousins, wonderful extended family, church community and beloved friends.
